A nest box put up when spring feels close may be too late for birds already checking territories and sheltered holes.
When to put up nest boxes: install them by late winter, ideally before prospecting begins in February and March; autumn is better still because boxes can provide winter shelter.

Put up nest boxes before spring starts
Install your box by late winter so birds have time to find and accept it. In England, autumn is often ideal because the box is available for winter shelter and early nest-site visits; a box fitted during March or April is not wasted, but a pair may already have settled elsewhere.
Use autumn for nesting and shelter
Leave a clean, empty box up through autumn and winter. Blue tits and other small birds may use it as a roost, or safe overnight resting place, during cold or wet weather. Do not add hay, cotton wool or sawdust because wild birds choose their own nesting material.
Act safely if spring has arrived
Fit a new box in late spring or summer only if you can do so without disturbing an active nest. It may help a later brood or become winter shelter, but do not expect an immediate tenant.
The best time to install nest boxes varies slightly with local weather as well as the calendar. An autumn nest box installation is useful almost everywhere in the UK, but boxes fitted in late winter should be put up earlier in mild southern or coastal areas, where the bird nesting season can start sooner. In colder upland, northern or inland gardens, birds may begin serious prospecting later. Watch for singing males holding territory, pairs repeatedly inspecting holes or birds carrying nest material: these signs mean a box should be left undisturbed.
If in doubt, put it up as soon as conditions are safe rather than waiting for one exact month; it can still serve as a winter roosting box if no pair uses it that spring.
Match your box to the birds in your garden
Choose the entrance, height and spacing for the species you actually see. A 25 mm entrance suits blue tits, great tits need about 28 mm, and a hole that is too large can admit larger birds or predators.
| Bird | Best fitting period | Box and entrance | Height and direction | Spacing and location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blue tit, coal tit | September to February | Closed box, 25 mm hole | 2 to 4 m; north-east or east | At least 2 m from another tit box; quiet cover nearby |
| Great tit | September to February | Closed box, 28 mm hole | 2 to 4 m; north-east or east | At least 2 m from another tit box; clear approach |
| House sparrow | Autumn to February | Sparrow terrace, 32 mm holes | 2 to 4 m; east or north-east | Group boxes together; eaves or sheltered wall |
| Starling | Autumn to January | Deep closed box, 45 mm hole | 3 to 5 m; sheltered aspect | Open flight route; strong fixing under eaves |
| Robin, wren | Autumn to February | Open-fronted box | 1 to 2 m; shaded and dry | Dense planting; concealed but accessible |
Give tits enough private space
Place blue tit, coal tit and great tit boxes at least 2 to 3 metres apart. These birds may defend a small nesting area, so several identical boxes on one fence can create conflict rather than attract more pairs.
Group sparrows, hide robin boxes
House sparrows often nest in loose groups, so a sparrow terrace can be mounted beneath eaves with clear access. Put open-fronted robin and wren boxes low in sheltered planting, not on an exposed fence.

Fix the box for shade, safety and dry access
Mount the box firmly in a dry, shaded position with a clear approach. In most British gardens, an entrance facing north-east or east avoids strong afternoon sun and much driving rain from south-west winds.
Check the box before fitting
- The roof overlaps the front and side panels, keeping rain away from the entrance.
- Small drainage holes in the base let moisture escape.
- Untreated timber or bird-safe recycled material has no peeling paint or sharp edges.
- The inside is empty, with no food, straw, fabric, cotton wool or sawdust.
- The entrance has a direct flight line, with no branch immediately in front.
- The box is stable and cannot twist in wind.
Reduce risk without false promises
Keep bird feeders away from the entrance, ideally elsewhere in the garden. Squirrel guards and metal entrance plates can help where holes are damaged, but a stable, sheltered box with no easy cat perch is more important.
Clean and inspect a box only when you are confident that it is empty, ideally in autumn after breeding has finished and before regular winter roosting begins. Wear gloves, remove old nesting material and loose debris with a dry brush, then check that the roof, drainage holes, entrance and fixing remain sound. Do not use insecticides, flea powders, household disinfectants or strong-smelling cleaners inside the box; a clean, dry interior is enough.
If birds are visiting regularly, delay the work. Take particular care with boxes on buildings or mature trees: if you find a bat, bat droppings or evidence that bats may be using the structure, stop and seek advice, as bats are protected.
Before fitting, assess the safety of the whole nest box position rather than the box alone. Check that a cat cannot easily jump from a fence, shed roof, dense branch or nearby ledge to the entrance, and avoid mounting a box where a climbing predator has an obvious route up the support. A predator guard may be worthwhile where squirrels enlarge holes, but it should not reduce the nest box entrance hole size or leave sharp edges.
After installation, recheck the box height, its north-east aspect where suitable, the clear flight route and spacing between boxes. A secure fixing and an uncluttered approach reduce risk more reliably than placing several boxes close together.
Your questions answered
Do birds shelter in nest boxes in winter?
Yes. Small birds may use boxes as overnight shelter during cold, wet weather; leave them empty and ventilated.
Is it too late to put up a bird box in may?
No. It may help a later brood or be used the following year, provided fitting does not disturb nearby nests.
Which way should a bird box face in the UK?
Usually north-east or east, avoiding hot afternoon sun and south-west rain. Shade and dryness matter most.
Can i put bird boxes near each other?
Tit boxes need 2 to 3 metres between them. House sparrow chambers are the main exception.
What should i put inside a bird nesting box?
Nothing. Birds bring their own moss, grass, feathers and other suitable local material.
When can i cut hedges without harming nests?
Check carefully from early spring to late summer. Active nests must not be disturbed under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
- Fit a box from autumn to late winter so birds can inspect it before breeding begins.
- Match the entrance hole and box style to the species visiting your English garden.
- Choose a shaded, dry position with a clear flight route and a secure fixing.
- Leave every box empty, and never inspect or clean one that may contain an active nest.
